Michael Warren, Health Services Research Unit, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent

The aim of health services research (HSR) is to produce knowledge that will contribute to protecting and promoting the health of people through improving the effectiveness and efficiency of health services. It is a multidisciplinary activity, usually requiring the cooperation of professional people delivering care in the services. Special consideration has to be given to the funding of HSR, the training and career prospects of the researchers, the process of commissioning the activities, ensuring the maintenance of standards, and to the dissemination and use of the results. The regional and district health authorities should become more involved in HSR, by supporting the training of research workers, providing career opportunities for them and by extending the support of units and programmes.
