Counting the cost of alcohol: gaps in epidemiological knowledge

Rebecca McDonnell
Alan Maynard

Correspondence to: Professor Maynard

This paper identifies the major difficulties in obtaining an estimate of the total annual resource costs of alcohol misuse. Significant gaps in the epidemiological literature are indicated and ways to improve the data stock are suggested. It is concluded that much more information than is currently available must be generated if present estimates of the social costs of alcohol misuse are to be improved and if public policy makers are to be able to develop policies to mitigate these significant resource burdens on society
