Oral history: Alwyn Smith
Wai-On Phoon
Emeritus Professor of Occupational Health University of Sydney
Sirs,
I very much enjoyed the article on Oral History by C. Cook, published in your issue of vol. 27, number 2, June 2005, on Professor Alwyn Smith for whom I have a high regard. I have known Alwyn for many years since his stay from 195658 in Singapore.
I like, however, to make a small correction. There was no Masters degree (in Public Health) during 195658 in Singapore. There was instead a Diploma of Public Health (D.P.H.), which started in 1953. I held the Chair of Social Medicine and Public Health from 1970 to 1987. The degree of Master of Science (in Public Health) was established at the same time as that of Master of Science (in Occupational Health) in 1973 and replaced the D.P.H.
Yours faithfully
