Energy conservation and the housing environment: the need for risk management
David Mant
Oxfordshire Health Authority Manor House, Headley Way, Headington, Oxford OX3 9DZ
The problem of indoor air pollution has been exacerbated by the desire to conserve energy. There is a need for community medicine not only to assess the risk involved but also to manage it. The process of risk management adopted by industry is presented in the context of specific contaminants of the housing environment which are thought to cause respiratory disease: radon, asbestos, formaldehyde, and nitrogen dioxide. The need to make decisions based on an explicit recognition of the risk involved is stressed. A final comment is made on the risk of sharks.
